Airspeed Oxford Mk. I LW903

Went out on my own on a way up to a business meeting in Newcastle, trying for two wreck sites on Urra Moor.

Despite a foot of snow on the top and slopes, I found both of them. Nice to have the moors to myself.

The first site was this Oxford, which we missed the last time we were up here, as we were running out of light.

Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mk. V T4171 "O" for Orange

Towards the bottom of a slippery slope of packed snow, I found the pictured fractured spark plug and assortment of bits from a Whitley, thought by some to be the first 'plane shot down over the British mainland by a German fighter.

Getting up that hill again was quite a bit trickier than getting down...

Snowy Whernside

Moustache Steve is pictured during an attempt to visit some sites on Whernside on Monday. It made for a cracking walk, but with a late start due to problems on the roads, after a couple of hours wading through knee-high virgin snow, we considered it best to abandon the attempt.

We'll be back.
