Airspeed Oxford Mk. I LW903

Went out on my own on a way up to a business meeting in Newcastle, trying for two wreck sites on Urra Moor.

Despite a foot of snow on the top and slopes, I found both of them. Nice to have the moors to myself.

The first site was this Oxford, which we missed the last time we were up here, as we were running out of light.

Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mk. V T4171 "O" for Orange

Towards the bottom of a slippery slope of packed snow, I found the pictured fractured spark plug and assortment of bits from a Whitley, thought by some to be the first 'plane shot down over the British mainland by a German fighter.

Getting up that hill again was quite a bit trickier than getting down...

All that remains of "A for Apple", (which was one of the most complete crash sites in the country) are these few rusty scraps, with previously molten and corroded scraps of aluminium all around.
