Lockheed Lightning P38G 42-13345/F5E 44-24229
A day out in the vicinity of Aberystwyth earlier in the week to look at a two sites with Matt ZX and a couple of our regulars.
First up the infamous and contentious Plynlimon Lightning, about which you'll see very little reliable information on the internet (other than this) - was it for example Lightning F5E 44-24229 or P38 42-13345?
More contentious and far more interesting to non-anoraks is who did this:
Who cut the turbocharger out of this wing and took it home back in 2003/2004? Here's what it used to look like pre-vandalism:
There's a sizeable reward for information leading to recovery...

Lockheed Lightning P-38F 41-7677 (Maid of Harlech) Update

We hear that the anoraks are once again up in arms about not being able to loot the Harlech P-38, which is receiving further press attention due in part to interest in TIGHAR's current expedition to Nikumaroro to look for Amelia Earhart's 'plane.

Walked up Tintwistle Knarr near Glossop with my 4 year old daughter yesterday to look again at the wreck sites up there (previous visit here). Great weather, was sweating by the time we got to the top.
A short distance from the oft-photographed cross and wreckage pile from the Lightning crash was what looked to be an impact site with these good-sized chunks of wreckage. The crook-shaped bit is maybe 500mm long, cast aluminium alloy.

For anyone new to wreckhunting, the greenish stuff around these bits is seen at many crash sites, and is quite indicative that you are looking in the right place.
