Cessna 310 F G-ARMK: The Magpies Strike Again!

Had a day out in Wales with Matt ZX last Friday. Weather report was filthy, but as it turned out, overly pessimistic. Weather was pretty much standard autumn mountain weather.

After visiting the mixed Anson and Ventura wreckage over the other side of Fynnon Lloer, we went up the stream to see the usually impossible to miss Cessna engine. No sign of it.

The one other walker we met all day on top said he'd seen it about a year ago. Got out my old high-accuracy coordinates. My sticks are very close to where it used to be. Definitely no sign of it.

It's probably in some saddo's garage then, though there's a small chance it has merely been moved, as comments on previous posts suggest it has been before.

Cessna Engine

The engine from this Cessna was still where we found it previously when we went up Daffydd on Monday on a training walk with Kev and Moustache Steve. The Anson and Ventura wrecks are also still in place, with nothing missing as far as we can see.

We had all sorts of fun with the Landy. First the starter motor burned out on the way there, requiring us to push-start 2 tons of Disco after going up and down the mountain. Didn't help that Kev came over all Bear Grylls and made us run all the way back down. Me knees are killing me.

The windscreen wipers failed in a storm on the way back, but they were brought back to life manually using bootlaces tied to the wipers.

All good fun.

Back to basics for us this week. It's pretty much all about the walk for us, so Mick persuaded me to climb to the summit of Daffydd, via a rather unstable ascent of the scree and rocks above the lake. He loves a cairn, does Mick.

Oh, and we looked for a few plane wrecks.

This looks like an exhaust manifold to me, though we understand the engines from this site were "recovered" a while back. We see with a spot of research that "The engines were removed in 1984 for the "Snowdonia Historic Aviation Group",without the landowners permission. The last large-ish piece of skinning was removed in 1996 by a collector/wreckologist from Cheshire."link.

There are still however fair sized bits scattered all the way down the Cwm from SH 65979 62473. It's rough ground for a 100% recovery.

Armstrong Vickers Wellington Mk. IV DV800

pile with slate

Someone has created a wreckage pile with cairn and plaque here, near to the coordinates we have for the crash of Wellington DV800. Unfortunately he seems to have written his plaque in tippex. We can see no mention in what is legible of Wellington DV800, and we were not sure initially that this looked like Wellington wreckage.

We would have expected to see a bit of geodetic, but we have had the part numbers from a component in the pile confirmed as Wellington IV, so I suppose that settles it.
