North American P-51D Mustang 44-72181

Mustang Wreck

Location: SD 99900 11183.

Hi, finally found the site (been looking on and off for 10 years!) so thanks very much. Please to say that its all still there, both from your and AC's phots and those in Dark Peak Wrecks from years past (I think it was mentioned in book 2). There are some fairly distinct trails around the site but I'd agree that the site is one of those less frequented. Now perhaps if you would be so good as to find the site of the Ju88 up saddleworth moor..........:)

What do you konw about the Junkers?

Very little Im afraid. Ron Collier once told me it "was on a plateau that you can see on your right as you drive out from Greenfield to Huddersfield", my late dad remembers something crashing up there during the war (but also thought the mustang was near "pots and pans" and could have confused either the Mossie or Dakota for it), and someone I took to be a farmer said he remembered 3 Germans turning up in Home Village one morning having walked off the moor from "ooop there" pointing towards Holme Moss, (this probably being the biggest "ooop" to point at - not the direction) . Not very helpful Im afraid.

Well, it's summat, though always a little nervous about poking about on Saddleworth Moor, Mick's been looking for an excuse for ages

The plateaus which fit the description would be Round Hill or Broadstone Hill...

I still would not rule out t'other side of the road though. Either way, I doubt the ministry would have left much of a Ju88 in '41 for us to find now. Please do treat all this with some caution -it's all heresay and rumour (though I do trust Mr Collier). Has anyone actually asked the landowners/ tenants were to look? What about Alan Clark?

And.....

Why the caution will Saddy Moor? I only ask as I blunder up there a lot!

Hi Mike,

I'm looking through the books we have to see if anyone has investigated this already, Pat Cunningham loooked into lots of rumoured German wreck sites, many of which he pronounced questionable..

As far as Mr Clark is concerned, he's not speaking to us. We disagree with him about the scientific value and moral aspects of digging up crash sites.

We'd normally narrow things down a bit before we start calling farmers.

As far as care on the moor is concerned, other than the usual concerns, they never found all the bodies, did they?

Shame about Mr Clark. Still I suppose every wreck hunter has their own view on stuff. I do do firmly believe the sites should be left alone at this point in time and history as there can be little to gain from doing anything else. Take your point about the moor! Good luck with research on this one and thanks for the site (and views expressed within!)
