Airspeed Oxford Mk.I HN429

Axe Edge Oxford
Originally uploaded by seansonofbig2

This Oxford wreck on Axe Edge was the first we found last Thursday. These undercarriage brackets seem to predominate at most Oxford wreck sites.

There often seems to be clay pigeon and target shooting going on at the nearby farm. Look out for red flags!

Noorduyn UC-64A Norseman 43-35439 or Defiant Mk.I T3921?

Norseman/Defiant

This scatter of mostly previously molten bits of aluminium on Shining Tor has provoked considerable controversy.

The author of "Peakland Air Crashes" considers the testimony of a local shepherd that the site was in existence in 1943 to prove that it cannot be the Norseman, which crashed in '44. He also reports a metal detector search as revealing nothing at the crash site the Norseman's pilot logged.

The owner of the "Peak District Air Accident Research" website insists that inspection stamps on some recovered parts prove it to be the Norseman.

We dunno.

This photo is of the larger of the two clusters.

Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mk.V BD230

Whitley: Muggington

Failing to find anything at the Canberra site near Monyash, we went for an easy win with this monument erected over the crater of the crash site (and grave for three of the crew) of a Whitley near Muggington(SK 29516 43973). More information about the crash is here.

Previous reports suggested that any scraps of wreckage ploughed up were laid on the foot of the monument. Any such scraps seem to have gone, and to have been replaced by accident or design with half a dead rabbit.

We'll get back to the Canberra under more favourable circumstances...

Both components have a fastener detail which might prove useful in deciding where they came from.
